2018 Peter Wood Creative Writing Award Recipient, The College of New Jersey
selected by Lacy Johnson: "These brief but powerful poems interrogate the relationship between the experience of the body and the experience of the world, between self and beloved, between what is seen and what is felt. The verse soars, the observations sear, the longing for connection becomes our own. In a world where understanding increasingly feels like a scarcity, these poems teach us a lesson we all know but often do not fully understand until it is too late: that there is no end to the distance fear creates between others and ourselves. These are bold poems by a bold writer."
Spring 2018 Student Reading Series, The College of New Jersey
Selected to read work at a student reading showcase on campus.
2017 Peter Wood Creative Writing Award Recipient, The College of New Jersey
selected by Charlotte Boulay: "This collection of poems has a cohesive voice, one that is searching for an answer to the “question” Plath says should be in a poem, but knows that answer is unreachable. The successful poems in homage to other poets could have stretched the poet’s style beyond recognition, but instead focus it. Throughout, I notice a finesse of the line—it moves me through each image and thought gracefully. The two centerpieces of the submission for me are, first, “NJ Transit #6910”, which, in its litany of station and town names and descriptions of fellow travelers gathers speed until it “sinks under the river” and remerges. Next, “They Built Me Like This” juxtaposes the emotive with the ordinary. For Jacqueline Delaney, loveliness is important, but beauty is placed in check by the frankness of expression: “it goes like this,” they say, and I believe them."
